Celiac Disease Remix by Amanda Surace

Summary

1). The theme that I am remixing is how people need to have a better understanding of Celiac Disease and fully understand what it means to be on the gluten free diet, so as to not cause misunderstandings about it.  I am creating a movie to show how many people do not know much about Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet and how some celebrities in the media are showing the gluten free diet in a different light that is greatly affecting people with Celiac Disease.

2). The purpose of my remix is to get people to have a better understanding of what Celiac Disease is and what it means to be on a gluten free diet, so that they can understand the problems that can occur for people with Celiac Disease when other people go on the gluten free diet..

3).  I want the audience to understand how Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet is a serious matter and when other people who do not have Celiac Disease adopt the gluten free diet, they are lessening the severity of the disease.

Making Rhetoric More Visible

I tried to show rhetoric more clearly through my remix by creating another way for the audience to understand what Celiac Disease is and what it means to be gluten free.  I wanted them to have a better understanding of the disease and the severity of the gluten free diet.  I did this by creating a video. I hope more people will have a better understanding of Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet.  Also, I wanted others who do not have Celiac Disease and choose to go on the gluten free diet understand how important it is for them to follow it correctly when they go out to eat at a restaurant.

My audience in this project is restaurant managers and people who choose to go on the gluten free diet that do not have the disease.  I wanted these people to be the audience of my remix because I want them to see what Celiac Disease is and how important it is to understand the gluten free diet that accompanies the disease.  Restaurant managers need to know this information because they may have customers who have Celiac Disease and need to eat a strict gluten free diet.  I wanted people that chose to go on the gluten free diet see how important it is that they follow the diet fully and accurately, so as to not cause confusion with restaurant managers and sickness in people that have the disease and have to be on the gluten free diet.

The purpose of my remix is to show what Celiac Disease is and what it means to be gluten free.  Also, I want to show how awareness is important, but is causing problems for people with Celiac Disease because some people are deciding to take up the gluten free diet as a lifestyle choice.  My remix supports my purpose by showing an interview I conducted on how many people know what Celiac Disease is and what it means to be gluten free.  I’m using that to lead into what it actually means and then showing how a celebrity is promoting the diet for other means, which is causing problems for people with Celiac Disease.

Reasoning

I chose to make a video for my remix because I thought this way would help people understand my topic more clearly.  I thought a video was one of the best ways to represent my topic.  I want people to leave with a good understanding of what Celiac Disease is and what gluten free means.  I want them to see how some people are adopting this diet just to be healthy, which is lessening the severity of the disease when people who actually have to be on the diet go out to eat.  This video will help people see it from my point of view and understand how I feel about people adopting the gluten free diet that do not actually have Celiac Disease.

At the beginning of my remix, I chose to include pictures of foods that contain gluten, to draw the reader in.  I then conducted an interview asking people what Celiac Disease is and what it means to be gluten free.  I included this to show how many people do not know what it is and showed how important it is that people understand this, so that people with Celiac Disease do not get sick.  I chose an informative clip from a documentary about Celiac Disease to help explain what Celiac Disease is.  I then explained that people need to understand Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet so as to not cause problems for people that have to be on the diet.  I also said that more people are being diagnosed with the disease, which is causing an increase in awareness.  I showed that the awareness is unfortunately reaching other people.

I then used a clip from Elisabeth Hasselbeck and an interviewer to show how she is promoting a gluten free diet for other people who do not have the disease.  I then go into explaining why this is causing problems for people with Celiac Disease.  By doing this, I hope people can understand why this is negatively affecting people that have to be on the gluten free diet.  I chose two songs throughout my video.  One called Viva La Vida by Coldplay and the other called Whatever It Takes by Lifehouse.  I used Viva La Vida to portray how I live my life with Celiac Disease and I used Whatever It Takes to show I will do whatever it takes to continue to spread correct information and awareness about Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet.

The Remix Process: Reflecting and Translating

In one of my papers, I wrote about how people choose to go on the gluten free diet even though they do not have Celiac Disease.  I described how this causes problems for people with Celiac Disease because when they go out to eat at a restaurant, the manager may not take the gluten free diet serious enough due to someone without the disease coming in and asking for the croutons to be on the side of their salad and claiming to eat gluten free.  The person with Celiac Disease cannot have these croutons even near the salad, so this causes misconceptions about how serious Celiac Disease is.  In this paper, I used invention by talking about Elisabeth Hasselbeck and how she is promoting misleading information about Celiac Disease.  She is promoting everyone to go on this diet to improve their health.  I also wrote about how Autistic parents put their Autistic children on the gluten free diet because they think it helps them, but there is actually not enough research to support this idea.  I used these examples to explain how these people are causing problems for people with Celiac Disease.  I used arrangement by telling a story from my life and then explained the importance of increasing awareness of the disease and the gluten free diet.  I then went into explaining how the awareness can actually get to other people who take it the wrong way.  I used Elisabeth Hasselbeck and parents of Autism here because they are promoting in wrong ways to other people in society.  I explained how this is causing problems for people who actually have to be on the diet.  I used an analytical and formal style of writing with citations in the text.  My delivery was done through a story from my personal life to draw the reader in.  I used revision by adding what I plan to do about more people adopting a gluten free diet because they want to be healthy.  I wanted the readers to understand that when these people go to a restaurant, they are lessening the severity of the diet and causing health complications for people with Celiac Disease.

In my remix, I use invention by creating a video including pictures of foods containing gluten, interviews that I conducted, an informative video about Celiac Disease, an interview done with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and some PowerPoint slides in between videos to fill in the gaps of the whole video and explain what each video is saying.  This will show how there needs to be more awareness of Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet, but not to promote other people to adopt the diet to improve their own health.  Through Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s video, people will see how she is promoting this wrong information.  I want people to understand that when anyone goes on the gluten free diet, people with Celiac Disease can suffer major health complications.  I used arrangement by first showing pictures of foods containing gluten to draw the audience in and then introduced the topic with a question, asking people what they think about seeing someone ordering a hamburger without the bun.  I explained further that people with Celiac Disease have to do this.  I then showed my interviews that I conducted of people that I found while going to and from my classes.  I interviewed them to see if they knew anything about Celiac Disease and used these to show that not many people know much about it.  I then, used an informative video to explain what it actually is.  After that, I used a few sentences about how more people need to be aware of this disease, but needed to be wary of others who promoted it in other ways.  I then used Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s interview to show that she is promoting everybody to adopt the gluten free diet.  I explained why this is a problem for people with Celiac Disease and asked people to please understand the gluten free diet to the fullest.  I used an informative and interesting style of a movie.  It was more direct than abstract due to the lack of knowledge about the disease and the gluten free diet.  I will start off the video with pictures of regular foods that contain gluten to bring the audience in.  I will then introduce the topic by asking the reader what they think about seeing someone ordering a hamburger without the bun and saying that it is because of Celiac Disease.  I revised by adding in music and pictures at the beginning.  I also added in more information to help people understand my topic better.

These rhetorical conventions are very similar to the ones used in my paper.  I’m using the Elisabeth Hasselbeck interview to show the misleading information that she is promoting as a part of my invention process similar in my paper.  However, the style is much more interesting and draws the audience in better than my paper.  It is less factual and more entertaining.  But it is very direct due to the lack of knowledge of Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet.  The delivery is quite different, in that I will not use a story from my personal experience with Celiac Disease, but I will use pictures so that the audience can relate better to what I am about to show.  The interviews I conducted are much different than anything in my paper and should help the audience relate to these people in the interview.

Outstanding Issues

I had a couple issues with technology.  When I was conducting my interviews, I found plenty of people who did not know what Celiac Disease or the gluten free diet was, however when I went back to my room to watch them, I could not hear the interviewees.  So, then I borrowed a video camera and was able to get a much better sound quality.  Getting used to the new programs, like movie maker and ilivid were also sort of a challenge because I was unfamiliar with how they worked.

I had a very hard time at the beginning trying to figure out what I wanted to do for my remix project.  At first, I was worried that a topic I wrote about could not be shown in an interesting way to people who do not even know what Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet are. But, then this idea just came to me and I started to build upon that.  If I was given another chance to make my remix project, I might use more personal examples from my life to help explain my idea better.  I also wanted my project to be more abstract, rather than direct.  But, I realized that it had to be more direct because not many people know what Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet are and, in helping them understand it, I had to include more information about it.

Diving Remix by Katrina Schlicker

Summary

1)    I am remixing my first and third papers. My first paper was about the people I know in diving and that’s shown at the end of my video. My third paper was about icons and why no one knows anything about diving.

2)    I took these papers and made it into a short video. I took a bunch of clips and put them to music and organized them in a fashion that would work for me.

3)    I tried to tell my audience about diving; about its events, its (potential) icons. Why people would dive and even what could happen if you make a mistake.

Making Rhetoric More Visible

I had hoped to take my arrangement of a chronologically arranged paper into a more grouped video (I put things in groups that make sense). I wanted to take the love I have of diving and show that through my video. I also wanted to explain what diving entails and show people that. My remix supports this because it states everything clearly and I put a lot of love into it (hopefully people can tell that as well).

My audience is the blogging community, my class (and hopefully new divers). It was pretty easy to determine my audience because we are posting it on our blog and I’m hoping that my video can inspire the divers of the future. I also hope that people will watch my video and be more interested in diving. Maybe my video will help bring a diving icon to the people.

Reasoning

I chose “Us” by Regina Spektor for my song. It was upbeat and kept a steady tempo that is fast and perfect just like diving. Some of the diving clips even fit in perfectly with the lyrical part of this song. The lyrics fit in with my remix when it came to icons. “They made a statue of us. The tourists come and stare at us.” I thought it was uncanny how much that could be related to the fact that diving has no public icons but the diving community almost does build little statues to their idols.

I chose the pictures at the end because I wanted to show my family. All of those girls are people that I love and respect and are pretty much another family in the diving community. I was hoping for more variety (more people, not just the same ones over and over) but I think it drives the point home about how these are my friends and my family. Especially the photo at the end. That would be me and Courtney. For the 2 years we dove together, we were as close as could be.

I also used only higher level diving clips for a reason. I wanted to awe the audience. I wanted them to be amazed at everything that these divers did. I wanted the audience to think how cool diving was and to look diving up some more… and maybe even try it out. I also chose the clips I did because I wanted to show off the skills of Greg Louganis, Laura Wilkinson and Dmitri Sautin. Each of them were showing off many skills that are unique to high ranking divers. These are the best of the best and  they can all dive very well.

The Remix Process: Reflecting and Translating

In my first paper, I revised it to be less confusing. I arranged it in a logical fashion; starting with being a diver and then I started talking about how my community changed by me becoming a coach. I tried to invent a paper where the reader could relate and added a lot of jokes and wrote very laid back to do so.

In my third paper, I arranged my paper by history, then knowledge needed, and then my arguments. I invented a paper that would teach the reader but be entertaining along the way. I wrote this paper laid back as well because no one wants to read a research paper online.

In my remix, I really couldn’t but in my sarcastic, dry-humored, witty jokes so I tried to poor all of my love and respect for diving and divers. I wanted to teach my watchers (just like in the third paper). I arranged my video in what seemed to be a logical order as well, starting with the divers that could be icons and moving on to what events diving consists of and then leaving off with why people dive.

Outstanding Issues

I had never edited a video before. It was a hassle to get all of the videos off of YouTube because the program I used offered around 10 different formats to download it so I had to figure out what format Windows Live Movie Maker used. Windows Live Movie Maker offered totally different problems. It would randomly just make a clip go black while I would preview it before it was done.

I never really had issues translating my paper into a remix once I started it. Before I started watching clips on YouTube, I just didn’t know. But as I watched more and more clips, what I wanted to do became apparent. I wouldn’t change my video for the world. I think it ended up exactly what I wanted it to be.

MRULE Remix by Katelyn Prine

Summary

1)  The theme I am remixing is my MRULE (multi-racial unity living experience) community. I did a collaboration of the many experiences I have enjoyed through my year of membership while also incorporating what it really means to be a member of my community.

2) To remix my paper I created a movie, using iMovie maker for Apple. I found this to be the best way to bring life to my papers topics.

3) The purpose of my remix that I focused on was to create a recruitment piece for my community. I wanted to make it short and sweet along with easily relatable and relevant to what MRULE offers to everyone.

Making Rhetoric More Visible

In contemplating how to take on this project and best portray MRULE I thought of the core values that my community upholds; service, discussions, community building trips and socials. All of these things are about doing and the best way I could come up with to show action was through video. Rhetoric in my community is best described through the voice and so I thought that combining many voices and ideas together was what I was going to do.

My audience is all who attend, plan to attend, and those who are affiliated with Michigan State University. I wanted my video to be a great highlight of what MRULE is all about. This is the best audience to veer my video towards because of the locality of my community and the hope of expanding the programs membership. I also wanted those who are affiliated with MSU to grasp the importance of cultural programs on campus and to show how they bring people together on a deeper level.

My purpose for this video was to have all who watch it get a taste of what the members of MRULE see as their community. I know that MRULE is not an easy group to explain in a few short words. The best way to understand is to just experience it and join. I wanted to portray an actual sense of membership in my video. I think that my purpose is pretty clear throughout my video; without me directly saying everything. I believe that the photos, video clips, and music I used help to bring a sense of clarity to my community. All of these methods supported my purpose in a healthy way to bring life and enjoyment to my remix.

Reasoning

To best elaborate on the choices I made while producing my video I would like to break it apart by the different methods that I used. In creating this movie I used an array of pictures, video clips, song clips, and different transitional backgrounds. I find that a unique mix of these methods portrayed the best feel for my remix project.

The first form that I started as my base was the background layout. On the cool program of iMovie I was able to choose an initial base. This gave my project a continuous theme. I chose the bulletin board look to help express my ‘recruitment’ and advertisement feel as one. The transitions between my photos and videos tied the cohesive mixture of the aspects of MRULE I was trying to capture. The song lengths and the method of fading in and out also added to the transitional work.

The pictures I chose to represent MRULE were mostly from my personal experiences along with those displayed on the group’s website. I focused on pictures that really caught the action aspects of MRULE. When I placed them in to the bulletin board layout I think that this helped show how opportunities through MRULE are open to everyone.

The video clips were from an array of different sources. I looked up YouTube videos and used the TED video from class. I thought that the video aspect helped create a voice and was a good invention piece that brought life to the photos. Being that the bulk of MRULE is involved in action, discussion, and service I wanted to portray this in little snippets throughout. I also used a few personal interviews about what MRULE means. This displayed to my audience the vast walks of life that join MRULE and how we all participate in a unique experience dependent on what we all can bring to the table.

Stylistically I feel that music makes all the difference. My song choices were mostly my personal favorites. These songs clips help unify my video by bringing an upbeat feel and flow. The lyrics to these songs have true meaning and help bring an already perceived feel to the video. The song such as “Just the Way You Are,” by Bruno Mars, is a mostly well known choice that my audience is able to relate to and is familiar with.

The Remix Process: Reflecting and Translating

The RAIDS aspect has become something that I think I do more often than not with a lot of my writings as a habitual act. I think about these aspects throughout my creating and developing process to fully develop my project.

To start off my project, mapping out and researching useful sources was the basis of my invention process. I wanted to make sure that I chose the perfect songs and videos that would bring the right light to my community. After collecting multiple creative materials the organizing process went in to full swing. I used the program iLivid that I downloaded from the Multimedia Writing site that we were provided with in class. This program helped me crop and edit the video clips that I wanted to use in my video. I was able to arrange these clips in a constructive way that benefited the style that I was using and in turn created the right delivery message. My revision process was very tedious. I probably watched my video fifty times. I watched it and analyzed all the transitions, song lengths, and audio work. This helped my video come together. I also used my sister and family as resources to watch my video and give suggestions on making some of these same decisions.

I think that rhetorical conventions in a video are very comparable to those in creating a remix. Essentially a remix is just a visual of the paper. It requires all of the same questions to be applied to it. They both have to keep the audience in mind and have to focus on a goal/purpose. I think that they both can be very powerful in describing and delivering a message.

A remix’s rhetorical conventions as I said are very comparable in the purpose but can be portrayed in obviously different ways. An original paper is a detailed explanation that can easily guide the reader to the ultimate thesis. A remix is a more creative and based specifically on perception. An audience member participating in a remix may get more or less out of it depending on a few slight stylistic choices. The interpretations of the potential viewers have to be taken into consideration to make sure the remix is successful.

In the same sense a remix can be a great alternative to gain attention for a community. Through this opportunity with our communities we are able to really show passion and love for what we do by creatively portraying our experiences. This can be a great advertisement piece for the community and more effective than a well written paper may be.

Outstanding Issues

I enjoyed creating my remix for MRULE. I had the opportunity to advance my skills in technology and movie making. I wish I had more chances to be creative in this manner throughout my other classes. I did have a slight difficulty in being that I do not personally have the iMovie program on my computer. I had to use great time management skills to complete the video when I was at home and had an accessible Apple computer.

I had a few initial issues with translating my paper into a remix format. MRULE is a very action oriented program so I wanted to make sure that I brought this across. It is definitely a unique program so writing my papers was a challenge in and of themselves. The remix brought across a few challenges in just knowing how to begin with capturing all that I had within my many papers.

The only thing that I might do differently after knowing the remix process to make my project more successful, I would have created some of my own video of the other core values in MRULE that I have experienced. This would have at least provided me with some more options when I went about creating the video. This would also have been more beneficial to my community because it would be something I could share and be more my own creation, rather than being more dependent on a collaborative mix of other sources to portray my community.
